What is the Difference between Jute and Burlap?

 In the natural fibre industry, jute and burlap are very common. The two names are generally used together or interchangeably within the jute and the natural fibre industry. Jute is a popular form of natural fibre which is long, Shiny and is produced from soft vegetable fibre. It is spun into long and strong Threads and used for packaging and bag manufacturing purposes.

 


On the other hand, burlap is not a fibre made of hemp fibres. Both jute burlap shares the same characteristics; however, both are used for different purposes and have some points of difference in terms of features. Characteristics of Jute

The common characteristics of jute are as follows make jute a favourable and usable natural fibre.

     The coarse texture of the jute makes it highly durable.

     The fibre has a naturally earthy smell, which is visible in all jute products.

Applications of Jute and Burlap

Both jute and burlap have the same list of characteristics. However, the difference exists in terms of applications. In terms of applications, jute is commonly used for manufacturing sacks and bags. On the contrary, burlap is generally used to manufacture rugs, table linens, ropes etc.

 

Since the texture of burlap is coarse and thick, it is not used for bag making purposes. With jute, you'll find a range of applications like manufacturing the upholstery foundation, creative and decorative handbags, horse covers and camp beds. Burlap is a thinner variety and can be successfully used for manufacturing nets and beautiful table linens.

 

Burlap is a product of jute, and hence you'll not find any significant difference between both. However, both have their form of application. You will find extensive use of both jute and burlap for different industrial purposes.
